Good Food Recap #2, Indonesian Edition : Shalom Indonesian Restaurant in CBD Area

Author: Rosa

Hello, good folks! I am back again with another food recap because I have been so busy preparing for a musical show last week and I would not have time to cook for my self or share my recipe here. Anyway, Good Food Recap is back with Indonesian Special Edition! It is special because Indonesia is my home country. Since I came here first time, I have never been craving Indonesian food so badly like what I do in my second year now. I started travelling around trying to find and try different Indonesian restaurant in Sydney. There are many popular Indonesian restaurant in Sydney regarding to my Indonesian peers. The one is CBD are Lestari, The Sambal, Shalom and Pendopo, and a little to the south-east, there are Ayam Goreng 99 and Rosbery Martabak in Kengsigton.

The Sambal on Kent

The one that I had previously and mostly visited were in The Sambal on Kent and Rosberry Martabak. Both are exceptionally popular with their own specialities. Just like its name, The Sambal serves the greatest kind of Indonesian sambal (if you are curious about what 'sambal' is, I will explain further below) while Rosebery Martabak is excel at their Indonesian special sweet pancake called 'martabak'. It would be my first time visiting Shalom yesterday, after being so exhausted working for a musical show, I feel like I deserve some reward for myself, hahaha. Thus, I asked my friend to take me to Shalom while I was in the city.

Shalom Indonesian Restaurant

Ayam Goreng
Shalom located in 299 Sussex St, Sydney NSW 2000, opens everyday from Monday to Sunday, from 11 am to 10 pm, except for Sunday, they open at 12 pm. Shalom is popular with their chicken curry, fried beef ribs , fried chicken and their homemade sambal. Sambal is actually a special Indonesia chilli paste which many Indonesian had to boost up the flavour of their food. There are many variation of sambal, but Shalom is very good at their sambal for chicken dish. Especially when you order Ayam Goreng (Fried Chicken) or Ayam Bakar  (Grilled Chicken) which usually comes with rice and different choice of Sambal. Shalom offers variant authentic traditional Indonesian food, from entree to their beverages. If you want to taste the taste of Indonesia, you ought to visit here.

Nasi Goreng
My friend and I seem to over-ordered the food but there was no food we regretted. We ordered Shalom Grilled Chicken (Ayam Bakar Shalom), Soto Ayam, Nasi Goreng (Indonesia Fried Rice), Bakso Goreng, and Ice Chendol.  I would say that Nasi Gorend is still best at Lestari, but Shalom indeed serves a good chicken set and and their homemade Shalom Sambal. However, what surprised me the most is their Soto Ayam, soto ayam is one of authentic kind of Indonesian chicken soups cooked with different spices and topped with variety of condiments. Shalom's soto ayam is so unexpectedly good that it reminds me of my mother's cooking and almost brought me to tears. The soto ayam is best when you had it with Bakso Goreng which is an Indonesian version of fried meatball.

Eating here is very cost efficient, with great atmosphere and quick service, you can make yourself full with big portion of good food for only around  $30 per person. However, you cannot really go here with big group of people, as the place is always crowded and there are only limited space for around 25 people to move around. I recommend you to go this weekend and try authentic taste Indonesia only in Shalom Indonesian Restaurant. This is the end of my food recap, I hope you are interested with Indonesian food and keen to try it , until then see you next time! Ciao
